“It’s so EXPENSIVE to live there!”
YES it is, don’t worry – EATING and LIVING on a BUDGET is possible/required to SURVIVE.
Where to EAT CHEAP in NEW YORK CITY PT 1 — [East Village]
NON-HEALTHY [use the ole, I walk everywhere so I can eat what I want mindset]
PAPYA DOG [14th St and 1st Ave] – A true WINNER in the book of CHEAP EATS. $1.50 HOTDOG, greasy CHICKEN STRIPS and FRIES, PAPAYA juice that seems to cure most HANGOVERS, and open 24 hours a day 7 days a week. A GREAT GRILL DOG, no WATER DOG.
VINNY VINCENTS [$1 Pizza] - A SLICE so THIN-you have to use the PAPER PLATE it’s served on as a UTENSIL to eat it with.
$1 slice is cheese only, toppings are extra. GARLIC SALT, SALT, and PEPPER are FREE and give the PIZZA some FLAVOR. MIDWEST PIZZA CONNOISSEUR’s – [NOTE] — PIZZA in NYC is far less SALTY than your favorite PIZZA back HOME. SEASON accordingly.
HALLAL TRUCK [11th st and 1st Ave] – These trucks are EVERYWHERE in the city. This one in PARTICULAR is THE BEST I’ve found. CHICKEN and RICE is $6 and can EASILY be two meals. I ENJOY with white SAUCE. LAMB over RICE, and their GYRO’s are also STELLAR.
BODEGA [Ave A between 13th and 14th St] – During the WEEK, before 4 PM, a SANDWHICH on a ROLL and a SODA is $4. If you want cheap breakfast, an EGG on a ROLL is $2. THE BREAD, need I say more…
HEALTHY [YOUR body will tell you when it's time to go this ROUTE]
SENOR POLLO [1st Ave BETWEEN 13th and 14th] – A bowl of YELLOW rice is $3.25. Add the GREEN SAUCE, lightly it is VERY HOT, and ZANG. A true TASTEBUD ASSULT. If you want to splurg an EXTRA $7 get a chick MEAL. Their ROTISSERIE CHICKEN IS OUT OF THIS WORLD!!
ASSOCIATES GROCERY STORE [14th St, between Ave A and 1st Ave] – CHICKEN BREAST was $1.29 per pound this week, STOCK UP and FILL your TINY FREEZER. BELVITA’s are great CHEAP BREAKFAST options, MOST things go on SALE often. SMALL kitchens DON’T mean you CAN’T Cook for YOURSELF.
FRUIT AND VEGGIE STANDS [EVERYWHERE in the SUMMER] – $1 TOMATOES, $1 GRAPES, $.25 BANANA, FRESH.
The VARIETY of CHEAP HEALTHY food is a bit more LIMITED than the UNHEALTHY choices. BALANCE your diet, but BE SURE to LIVE a little while you’re at it.
DESERT RECOMMENDATIONS COMING SOON!! :)
